The Joy of Playing the Accordion: A Simple Guide for Everyone

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Accordion, Bayan, Harmonica - What's the Difference?

The accordion family includes a variety of musical instruments that look like boxes with keyboards on both sides and bellows in the middle. These instruments are the accordion, the Bayan (button accordion), and the Russian garmon. They all work by pressing buttons or keys and moving a part called the bellows to make sound. Each has its own special features and sounds, making them unique in their own way.

The piano and button accordions are a good choice for people who enjoy different kinds of music. You can play everything from classical and jazz to folk and pop. Accordions come with either piano-style keys or buttons, so you can choose what you're most comfortable with.

The Piano Accordion

The Piano Accordion is a popular type of accordion that features a piano-style keyboard on the right hand side. This design makes it easier for people who already know how to play the piano to learn the accordion. Even if you're a beginner, the familiar layout of the keys can make the learning process more straightforward. The Piano Accordion is versatile and can be used to play a wide range of music styles. Overall, it is a user-friendly and adaptable instrument, making it a popular choice for beginners and experienced musicians.

The Bayan

The Bayan is a button accordion that is played in many countries across the globe. It's known for its deep, rich sound and is often used in classical music. Many professional players prefer the Bayan for its ability to produce complex music.

In Balkan countries like Serbia, the Bayan is also referred to as a Harmonika.

One interesting thing to note is that the Bayan can have different button layouts, known as griffs, on the right-hand side, depending on the country. For example, you might find Bayans with a C-griff or a B-griff, which changes the way you play the instrument. C-griff is more popular in Western Europe and the USA, and B-griff is popular in Eastern European countries.

The Russian Garmon

The Russian garmon, also known as a harmonica, is mostly used for Russian folk music. It usually has fewer notes than a regular accordion, giving it a unique sound. If you're interested in Russian culture and folk music, this might be the instrument for you, although it's not as versatile as the button and piano accordions.
